Studying couter-radicalization

Lamia Mellal participated in the seminar "Counter-radicalization and living together: assessment, impact and perspectives" organized by Samir Akacha of Coconutwork. She presented how she deconstructed the category of "radicalized" as conceived by the state to document the impact of post-2015 public policies on the daily lives of Muslim students in France.

The issue of terrorism has been a major Topic in the Western world since the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001, and particularly in France since 2015. The legislative arsenal and security devices deployed such as the State of Emergency or the separatism law have since profoundly transformed the judicial, educational, media and social landscape on the national territory and beyond. In Europe, many projects have been created on the theme of radicalization of young Muslims. This topic is treated from all angles, especially repressive, military or legislative, but rarely from the angle of living together and the defense of rights as a method of prevention and construction of a common future, and rarely from the penitentiary and evaluation aspects of public policies against radicalization. This seminar aims to absorb elements of context and little publicized field actions, in order to offer social, education and youth workers, journalists and associative activists as well as politicians, new perspectives on the issue, and a moment of reflection on the policies that are already put in place.
