During her stay at UC Berkeley under the supervision of Professor Charles Hirschkind, Lamia Mellal co-organised a seminar entitled : “The War on Terror and the domestication of Muslim Lives in Europe and the United States: Documenting, Translating, and Voicing Individual and Collective Experiences”.
November 2024
For the 5ᵉ meeting of the RIED (Rencontres internationales du Réseau International Education et Diversité) in Marseille, Lamia Mellal will contribute to a panel entitled 'Penser l'école à partir de la race: la dimension structurelle du racisme dans les systèmes scolaires francophones'. She will present (online) an episode of the podcast produced with high school pupils from two secondary schools in the northern neighborhoods of Marseille as part of her participatory research. She will present an analysis of an episode entitled "Frontières" in which the pupils describe and identify the various " barriers " they experience in their high schools (racial, generational, hierarchical, physical or symbolic). Her presentation is entitled: "Les frontières raciales de l'école: l'espace scolaire raconté par les élèves". The aim will be to show the link between the securitization of schools infrastructures in the post-2015 context and the accentuation of racialization processes at school, in order to show the central place of the school institution in the production/reproduction of the 'Muslim problem' (Hajjat, Mohamed, 2016).

As part of the TransMed plenary sessions in Marseille, Lamia Mellal presented her work in a panel entitled: "Meeting with researchers on the issues of integration and inequality at school". By listening to an episode of a podcast produced with high school students in Marseille, she introduced her research on the school experience of young high school students in the northern districts of Marseille in the post-2015 security context, marked by increased surveillance of Muslim communities.

Lamia Mellal will participate to a conference organized by IREMAM at INSPE in Aix-en-Provence. Her paper is entitled: “Students under surveillance: the effects of post-2015 security policies on the everyday school life of high school students in Marseille's northern neighborhoods”. She will present the podcasts and shorts films made with students as part of her participatory research in Marseille.

In the framework of a conference in Marburg (Germany) organized by the EASA working group Anthropology of Peace, Conflict and Security, Lore Janssens and Alex Govers facilitated a method lab titled “Mapping trajectories of studying up. A method lab to explore methodological and ethical challenges and potential interdisciplinarity opportunities”. This workshop aimed to open a space of mutual learning and exchange to reflect upon two main questions: what does it mean to study up? What types of openings does interdisciplinarity allow for?

In January 2024 took place the third conference of Catalan Anthropology. Alex Govers participated in the panel State in Action organized by the working group on State and Public Action by the Catalan Institute of Anthropology (ICA). In this panel, Alex presented his fieldwork in Hospitalet de Llobregat with local community mediators in the Area of Security and Social Cohesion.
November, 2023
On November 23rd & 24th Alex Govers took part to the colloquium “Current issues in European studies: actors, practices and representations” organized by SAGE (Societies, Actors, Government in Europe) at Sciences Po Strasbourg. The colloquium was an opportunity to reflect on the different approaches of conducting a political sociology of EUrope. In this framework Alex Govers presented his research on the experiences of local preventive actors engaged in European networks of practice and knowledge.

Lamia Mellal took part in the Workshop "Anti-racism in Education" organised by F. Zehra Colak (Utrecht University), Leila Mouhib (Université libre de Bruxelles/University of Mons) and Elif Keskiner (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) at the Free University of Amsterdam from 7 to 8 November 2023.

By taking part in the workshop entitled "The construction of Islam as a public issue and its effects on the experience of minority school staff" on October 26 and 27 in Paris, Lamia Mellal was able to further develop her reflection on the work she conducts with racialized school staff in parallel with her work with students".

On October 13th, Lamia Mellal was invited by Nilüfer Göle to take part in a round table entitled "Disruptive body, normative gaze, Islam and nation" on 13th October at Columbia Global Centers. The aim of the discussion was to collectively reflect on the controversy around the "abaya" worn by some high school girls in France, which will be banned in September 2023. Lamia Mellal was able to present her research with students in France and share an episode of the podcast she co-produced with four high school students who relate their own experiences.

In the frame of the project, Lamia Mellal (PhD researcher in anthropology) and Farah Kassem (research unit: Intermedia) co-conducted an audiovisual workshop with the students of the Denis Diderot high school in Marseille. The workshop took place from the 6th till the 13th of April 2023. It resulted in the making of 4 short films in collaboration with the students.

During the RC21 Conference on “Ordinary cities in Exceptional Times” in Athens, Alex Govers Pijoan presented anongoing research collaboration with Lore Janssens on the urban ramifications of counter-terrorism and radicalization prevention policies in the Brussels Region.

Lamia Mellal has participated in a workshop with the director Léa Drouet in Brussels. The aim was to share methodological reflections on how research and artistic creation questions the issue of youth and discrimination. Read more here.

With Montassir Sakhi, Hamza Esmili will be presenting their shared work on the notion of djihad within the Syrian revolution at Université Paris Nanterre. Their talk will be entitled : “D'un djihad l'autre. Cararctérisations concurrentes de la lutte au sein de la révolution syrienne”.

Lamia Mellal participated to seminar of the ANR CHOICE (Challenging the hegemonic order: the Israeli case examined) organized by Karine Lamarche on April 9th in Nantes. She presented her work on processes of racialization at a bilingual school “of peace” in Israël/Palestine.

From the 3rd of April 2022 until the 9th, Farah kassem was invited as a guest speaker and trainer in the frame of KinoLab in Baku, Azerbaijan. She gave a masterclass on storytelling and later a workshop following the participants in the making of their teasers for their upcoming documentary films. KinoLab supports filmmakers from Azerbaijan to develop their projects from the early stage. The workshop accompanies them through the first steps of their films - the subject, narrative, and visual language development, necessary in order to develop their stories and push their projects further.

On the 2nd of June 2022, Lore Janssens will deliver a presentation at the Surveillance Studies Network Conference in Rotterdam. Based on meetings and interviews with security, prevention and social services, she will explore the development of the Belgian security state and its racial-religious contours.

Lamia Mellal participated to the seminaire “Education” organized by IREMAM (Institut de Recherches et d'Études sur les Mondes Arabes et Musulmans) in Aix-en-Provence on March 25th as a discussante of Julien Garric’s work on ethnicisation at schools in Marseille. On April 29th, she will present at the same seminar the beginning of her work about the impact of deradicalizing policies at school in Marseille.

Hamza Esmili was invited to give a lecture at Université de Tours on his work on religious reaffiliation amongst postcolonial immigration in France and the variety of subsequent governmental policies.

Nadia Fadil and Lore Janssens participated to the international conference “Au-dela du séparatisme et de la radicalization” organized by the université de Strasbourg. They presented a paper on the role of feelings and affect in the management of cases by frontline workers who deal with radicalization.
December 14th, 2021
Lore Janssens gave a seminar on how to communicate research finding to policy makers and practitioners. In this seminar, she gave some practical tips and reflected extensively upon the challenges and opportunities when simultaneously researching and addressing the audience of policy makers and practitioners. This seminar took place in the framework of a seminar series Lore Janssens is co-organizing with Elsemieke Van Osch and Hannelore Hooft called Ethnography, engaging with the field and the public.
